Psychologist Daniel Goleman points to five traits for helping boost emotional intelligence:
- Self-awareness

Introduction
Intrapersonal skills are all about listening to your own voice that comes from within and managing it to get the desired results in day today’s life. The intrapersonal skills and communications occurs within an individual’s own mind and it must not be confused with the interpersonal skills as they both have different sets of skills as well as outcomes. Intrapersonal skills have the ability to initiate appropriate attitude and reaction due to positive internal dialogue that occurs within the mind (Schlinger. 2009).
Self-Esteem and Stress Management Influencing Emotional Intelligence
Self-esteem and stress management are the two most important aspect of intrapersonal skills that allows an individual to build upon their emotional intelligence that can help them in surviving tough situations despite the circumstances. Emotional intelligence is the measure of a person’s skills to recognize and manage their emotions and that of other people, both in terms of individuality and in groups (Macedonia, 1986).
Managing stress effectively can successfully help an individual to monitor and manage their emotional intelligence effectively and they will be less likely to be suffered from depression. It will eventually helped the same individual to gain significant self-esteem that ultimately will allow him to be able to cope up with the dire circumstances (Jones, 2007).
Three ways to use Emotional Intelligence for Success
- Developing Empathy- It I one of ensuring that develops awareness amongst individuals about the feelings and the needs of the others where it enables that particular individual in seeing things from the point view of the others.
- Self-management- Conquering emotional intelligence allows an individual to have a better self-control regime as it helps a person in keeping their emotions at check despite the circumstances.
- Motivation- It drives motivation for the people that have gained emotional intelligence through adequate practice and helps them in achieving their goals that were set and were committed to.

Intrapersonal skills do have the ability to make a person more reliable on their positive thought process where an individual must be ready to refine their positive thoughts from the negative ones.

Emotional intelligence allows an individual to keep in check their emotions despite the circumstances where they act in accordance with the comfort levels of the people they are working with both in terms of professionally as well as personally. Having a good level of emotional intelligence is important in terms of understanding the needs and feelings of others which in turn can help us in improving interpersonal relationships (Colman, 2008).
Leading by example
On personal front, I always try to be in the shoes of my parents and try to understand their needs and feelings towards me and try to have a better perspective of the whole situation in order to be more rational in terms of venting out my disappointment if something does not go my way. Thinking from their point of view enables me to be calm despite the circumstances.
Professionally, I pay attention towards my colleagues in order to have a closer look and try to understand how they feel during certain situation as it allows me to have a better connection with them and strengthen our relationships. Even if they do not show any emotions, I do understand how they must be feeling by only looking at their actions and gestures (Petrides, 2001).
Emotional intelligence skills I need to work
Empathy and social skills that I have identified for myself that needed some work in order to get along with the people on both personal as well as professional front. These are the two skills that I understand has the ability to transforms an individual’s success in terms of them getting along with the people on professional and personal space (Goleman, 1998).
For being more empathetic, I am trying to develop the art of listening more and paying attention to people’s verbal as well non-verbal messages which includes their gestures, body movements and physical signs of their emotions (Murphy,2014).

Researchers and scholars clearly have outlined proper plans to boost emotional intelligence and have specified certain traits that can help boosting it. However, it is for the individuals to develop those traits and cultivate it for the betterment of them. The five traits that are worth cultivating to boost emotional intelligence are:
- Self-awareness
- Self-regulation
- Motivation
- Empathy
- Social skills
The acknowledgement for these traits are there but for individuals it is tough to cultivate them for the required boost.
Empathy- Tough one?
How many of us are like really ready to listen to someone else’s turmoil or problem in order to provide a decisive solution for the same? The answer for the question could well be very few as we all know and understand that in today’s times when time is at scarce there will not be many people that have the heart and empathy that will enable them to listen to other people’s problems (Gardner, 1983).
And for that matter empathy is one trait that must be cultivated systematically in order to be more compassionate towards our fellow human beings.
How to nurture empathy?
Children can learn empathy growing up but can we train adults to have a significant chunk of it? The answer could well be yes, as we know that there can be certain incidents or situations that can transform a person and more importantly imbibe empathy into their mind and heart. Self-realization is the best way to have more of empathy and so does acknowledging the emotions of others and for that matter adults that have little emotions must try to understand the feelings of other in order to get a proper evaluation of their own emotions. And stay with the feeling because it is for some reason that it is there and for that matter individuals must acknowledge it (Payne, 1986).
Conclusion
Emotional intelligence is one skills worth cultivating and so does all its important traits. Empathy is one traits of emotional intelligence that is lacking in humans today and for that matter it is one trait that must be cultivated in order to get the best out of human emotions. The process however is tough but surely not impossible and people must try and imbibe this most important trait of emotional intelligence into their heart and mind (Smith, 2002).
